Dynamical Neurofeedback® – Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Dynamical Neurofeedback®?
Dynamical Neurofeedback® is an advanced, non-invasive form of brain training designed to support the brain’s innate ability to self-organize and self-regulate. Unlike traditional neurofeedback, it does not rely on a single brain-mapping session, pre-set protocols or reinforcement. Instead, it provides the brain with real-time information about its own activity, allowing it to make its own adjustments moment by moment.
This process is non-linear and non-directive—meaning the system doesn’t “push” the brain to behave a certain way. It simply mirrors the brain’s own activity back to it, inviting reorganization from within.
How Is Dynamical Neurofeedback® Different from Traditional or Linear Neurofeedback?
Traditional or “linear” neurofeedback often involves targeting specific brainwave frequencies to increase or decrease activity in particular regions. These systems typically use therapist-driven protocols and involve diagnostic assumptions.
Dynamical Neurofeedback®, by contrast:
Requires no diagnosis, yet everyone can benefit from it
Makes no assumptions about what your brain “should” be doing
Adapts continuously, each second, to your brain’s changing activity
Provides feedback based on the central nervous system’s real-time state
Does not attempt to control or condition specific brainwaves - yet it informs client about condition specific activity
This makes it suitable for a wide range of individuals and goals, from well-being and resilience to performance and self-discovery.
What Can Dynamical Neurofeedback® Support?
Due to the range of treatment-like effects, Dynamical Neurofeedback® has been used by individuals seeking support in areas such as:
Feeling calmer and less reactive
Improved focus and clarity
Better emotional resilience
Sleep quality and regulation
Greater adaptability to stress
Enhanced creativity and problem-solving
General well-being and personal development
Clients often report positive changes in how they feel and function, but outcomes are individual and cannot be guaranteed.
Is Dynamical Neurofeedback® Safe? Are There Side Effects?
Yes, Dynamical Neurofeedback® is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. Because it does not stimulate, drive or suppress brain activity, but only reflects it back to the brain, it works gently and respectfully with the nervous system.
What Happens in a Typical Session?
Each session lasts around 33 minutes. Here’s what to expect:
You’ll be seated comfortably while a few small sensors are gently placed on your scalp and ears.
These sensors read brain activity—they do not stimulate the brain.
Music will play from the system. You don’t need to actively listen to a music - you just need to be physically present in the room. The music occasionally “interrupts” based on subtle shifts in your brainwaves—this is the feedback.
These micro-interruptions serve as a mirror, drawing the brain’s attention to its own activity, without analysis or judgment.
There’s nothing you need to do during the session - you can choose your activity (for example read, write, play video games, answer emails, pay bills, sleep etc) . Most people find the process deeply relaxing.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Dynamical Neurofeedback® is not a one-size-fits-all approach. The number of sessions varies based on:
Your individual goals
Your current nervous system state
How your brain integrates the feedback
Some people notice subtle shifts after just a few sessions. For others, changes emerge more gradually. A foundational series of 10–20 sessions is common so that symptoms start reducing, while most of clients choose about 30 sessions for additional symptom improvement and sustained benefits.
Can I Use Dynamical Neurofeedback® Alongside Therapy or Medication?
Yes. Dynamical Neurofeedback® is compatible with most therapeutic and medical approaches. It does not interfere with medications or talk therapy—in fact, many clients report that other interventions work more effectively when their nervous system is better regulated.
However, any changes to medication should always be discussed with your prescribing clinician.
How Will I Know If It’s Working?
Because Dynamical Neurofeedback® supports self-regulation rather than treating specific symptoms, benefits can show up in many ways. You might notice:
Feeling calmer or more grounded
Clearer thinking
Improved sleep
Less reactivity or anxiety
Easier decision-making
Greater adaptability to daily challenges
Your experience is unique, and we encourage regular reflection with your practitioner to track shifts and support integration.
Does This System Diagnose or Treat Anything?
No. Dynamical Neurofeedback® is not a diagnostic tool and does not treat or cure any condition. It is a brain training process that allows the central nervous system to become more flexible and resilient. Treatment-like effects occur as a natural result of increased self-regulation.
Who Can Benefit from Dynamical Neurofeedback®?
Dynamical Neurofeedback® is suitable for adults, children, and seniors, including those who:
Are feeling stuck or overwhelmed
Seek greater emotional regulation
Live with challenges such as ADHD, trauma history, or anxiety (as part of a wider support plan)
Want to improve creativity, performance, or clarity
Simply wish to function at their best
Because the process meets each brain where it is, no diagnosis is required to begin.
Do You Work with Neurodivergent Clients or Individuals with Developmental Differences?
Yes. Because Dynamical Neurofeedback® does not impose protocols or require cognitive participation, it is well suited to individuals who are non-verbal, developmentally diverse, or who experience communication challenges. Sessions are designed to be gentle and non-demanding, making them accessible across a wide range of abilities.
Is This Covered by Insurance or NDIS?
Dynamical Neurofeedback® is not covered by Medicare or most private health insurance in Australia. Speak to us regarding possible NDIS options.
Is There Scientific Evidence Supporting Dynamical Neurofeedback®?
Dynamical Neurofeedback® is deeply grounded in principles of clinical trials, neuroscience, neuroplasticity, and real-time brain feedback.
We are committed to science-informed practice. If you’re interested in the research, we’re happy to share peer-reviewed studies that relate to the theory and outcomes of brain training approaches. You are also invited to read our extensive Blog Posts which cover clinical research results.
